A Newbie's Guide to RPG Forums Online

Postby Ozental » Mon Jan 31, 2005 2:03 pm

WHERE DO YOU BEGIN?
You may be looking at the RPG Forums Online site and not know where you should start. I will tell you about the main areas and what you can do there.

Forum: In the main heading area of the site, click the "Forum" link. This link will show you all the forums where you can post and read messages:

* "Announcements, Introductions, Help and and Off-Topic Conversations": This is where the administrators of the site will post news announcements and where you can post messages if you are having a problem with RPG Forums Online. I would recommend that every new user goes to the "Introduce Yourself" category and post a new message introducing yourself, your likes and dislikes, etc. There is also an area for "Contests and Competitions" that are currently running.

* "Role-Play Central": This is where you post messages as a fictional character as part of a message game. A message game is role-playing by sending messages about what your character is doing (more on this later). Some people also call this 'play-by-post role-playing'.

* "The Continent of Isis": This is where you can go to participate in role-plays and related topics based upon the fantasy land of Isis. Within this area you will find information on Isis, including maps, nation demographics and the like, a section for character profiles as well as the role-plays themselves.

* "Legend of the Green Dragon": This is where you can read or post messages about the LotGD game which is available within the site. This section also includes a Beginner's Guide the game and LotGD contests.

* "Fantasy Genres": This is where you post messages relating to fantasy themes, like anime and manga, books, PC and console games, music, movies and films.

* "The Writer's Café": This is where you can submit and read original stories, poems and fan fiction.

* "MU* (Multi-User) Games - MUDs, MUXs, MUSHes, MUVEs and MOOs": This is a more specialised area for people interested in Multi-User Games.

LotGD: The Legend of the Green Dragon game is a text-based, multi-player fantasy CRPG that runs through your web browser. Explore and fight your way through cities and forests in your hunt for the green dragon.

RPG World: This is where you can create your very own RPG character, for use within the online gaming section of the site. RPG World is split into two sections: (1) Level 1 - ADR RPG and (2) Level 2 - Moogie's RPG.

(1) Level 1 - ADR RPG: Choose from one of 9 classes (fighter, druid, magician, monk, thief, barbarian, bard, paladin or priest), 7 races (human, half-elf, half-orc, elf, gnome, hobbit or dwarf), 6 elemental types (water, earth, holy, fire, ice or wind) and 3 alignments (neutral, good or evil) to create your very own RPG character. Then you can buy and sell items and equipment, open up a shop, visit different areas (like the forge or courthouse) and battle monsters and other players. You can also buy your character a pet!

(2) Level 2 - Moogie's RPG: Choose from one of 5 classes (hero, mage, swordsman, thief or warrior) to create yet another RPG character. Then equip and train him/her to fight a variety of monsters or other players, auction items for the highest price possible or battle bosses. Oh, and the more you post, the higher the level you become.

(3) Level 3 - Flash RPGs: Pick one of several Flash RPGs to play, including Tactics Core, Crimson Warfare, Sim Girls and Gauntlet. (These require Macromedia Flash Player).

The Gaming Zone: This is a fun place to hang out, a place to play a variety of games. There are over 40 'arcade-style' games like Hangman, The Lottery, Black Jack and even a place where you can have your fortune told. You can also get a job for any RPG characters you might have (see above).

RP Chat: The chat room is dedicated to live role-playing and no Off-Topic conversations should occur here. Instead of playing by message games, you can role-play live with people who will respond immediately. Some people prefer this method, although there can be a lot less structure to the games and often there are no rules as to who can join or why. This sort of play is the purest form of freeform role-playing. If you with to explore this more, click the 'Role-Play Chat' link in the main heading area.

Podcast: This will display information on our site podcast, enabling you to 'hear' RPG Forums Online as well as read it!

Radio: Yet more audio-related features, but this time you can listen to our site radio, featuring many different music channels from rock/pop to classical.

Gallery: The Gallery feature enables you to view/upload photos to share with other forum members. Photo topics include: general member photos, role-play character portraits and other miscellaneous role-play material (e.g. maps, screenshots).

Honours: See the list of members who have received 'honours' for various accomplishments.

Non RP Chat: The chat room is dedicated to Off-Topic conversations, for general chatting with other forum members. If you with to explore this more, click the 'Non Role-Play Chat' link in the main heading area.

Downloads: This is a place where you can download files that other users have uploaded (or indeed, you can upload files yourself). You can download walkthroughs and FAQs for RPG games on GameBoy Advance (GBA), Playstation One or Playstation 2, GameCube, Xbox, N-Gage, Nintendo DS, Playstation Portable (PSP) and other consoles, as well as desktop themes, wallpapers, screensavers and movies. (Please see the Rules and Regulations posted in the forum before uploading any files - do not upload any illegal or materials to which you do not own the copyright).

There are other sections to the site, but you can explore these in your own time.

WHAT DO WE MEAN BY "ROLE-PLAYING"?
There are various types of role-playing but let me explain what role-playing options you have here. The majority of role-playing games here are called 'free form text based games'. A free form game means that there are no strict rules with no Dungeon Master determining the outcomes of the game. Also, there are no dice or statistic sheets. Free form role-playing is more like a group of people writing a book or novel, where players (you) create fictional characters and assume their personalities, actions, roles and responsibilities.

However, the site does take feature Dungeon Master driven games and graphical RPGs which are popular with certain people. The choice is really yours.

ABOUT TEXT-BASED, FORUM MESSAGE GAMES / PLAY-BY-POST ROLE-PLAYS
You can access these games through the 'Forums' link and then scrolling down to the "Role-Play Central" section.

Before we look at some actual role-plays, it is a good idea to get to grips with the rules and regulations of RP posting within this site. Go to the section "Out-of-Character Discussions (All Themes)". At the top of the list of posts is a 'sticky' post called "Role-Play Rules for In-Character Posts". Please read these before proceeding. They will give you good advice on how to role-play and things you should and should not do at all cost.

Now let's look at some actual role-plays. The most popular section is "In-Character RPs (Traditional Fantasy)". If you click on this link it will bring up the current message games. Listed under the heading "Topics", you will see the current RPs. It's a long list. If you find one that you like and wish to join it, make sure you have read the recent (if not all) entries for that RP and then send a PM to the RP thread creator asking if it is OK to join, or find the corresponding OOC thread in the Out-of-Character Discussions (All Themes) category and ask within that thread if you may join. Many consider this common courtesy.

If you do not see one you like, consider starting one yourself.

There is also a "Role-Play Academy", which might be a good place to start if you are new to role-playing. This is a place where you can learn to write well-formed role-plays and be taught skills such as creating good RP themes, how to be descriptive in your posts and creating interesting character profiles.

THE CONTINENT OF ISIS / JOIN A NATION
In addition to the "Role-Play Central" section mentioned above, there is also "The Continent of Isis" role-play area. The Continent of Isis is essentially a setting for role-plays. There is an "Out-of-Character" section that contains a map of Isis, demographic information on each nation in Isis and details of races. In order to participate in the role-plays, you need to join a nation by clicking the 'Join A Nation' link in the main site header. For further information, on Isis and related topics, visit the "Out-of-Character Discussions (General and Reference)" forum.

CREDITS AND KARMA
Credits are given for posting in the forums (but obviously spamming posts just to get credits is not tolerated), killing monsters within the RPG World games, playing Arcade games found within the Gaming Zone and by trying your luck on the lottery or Black Jack games. The credits themselves are mainly used within the RPG World games, where you can buy and sell items, equipment and weapons.

Karma is an extension of credits. For every new topic you create in the forum, you get one Karma point. (Karma is for new topics only, not replies). Unlike credits however, Karma can not be 'used' anywhere in the forum. You can not buy things with them, for example. They have been implemented more for prestige.

HONOURS
Honours are given to members who achieve certain tasks or contribute greatly to the site in one fashion or another (e.g. graduating from a class in our RP Academy or by donating our PayPal fund).

USER ATTITUDE
User Attitude is a 'fun' way to see how much you are valued on the site. Other members can enter an 'attitude value' for you ranging from 1 to 10 (1 being the worse, 10 being the best). So if you are more helpful and participate greatly, you are likely to have a higher rating.

JOBS
You may have seen the term 'jobs' in various places around the site. Registered users of this site can have up to two jobs. Jobs have no real function within the site, except just for a bit of fun. However, you do get a salary for your job so it is one way to get a few extra credits. To get a job, click the Gaming Zone link and then Jobs. It should be pretty easy to work out from here what you need to do to get a new job or resign from an existing job.

CONCLUSION
That's the basics of the forum and the site. If you have any other questions, I would suggest that you post those in the "Suggestions and Help" forum category where myself and other forum members will be able to help you out.

Enjoy...

Hello there. I have just started this game and I am lost. What is a rp thread. I understand rp chats but the forums are a new thing to me so im a little worried about that ^_^.
Its seems as though individuality is something wrong now there are always rules surpressing true feelings and I for one am sick of it.. People who think they now it all have no idea of whats really going on...

Well an RP thread is basically the same as an RP chat, only that it is using the forum to do the role-play and you post messages rather than chatting them. It's less 'real-time' but the RP is there forever.

Visit the Role-Play Central part of the forum to see various RPs, or visit the free-form RP link: http://www.rpgforumsonline.com/viewforum.php?f=38

Indeed, they never have to end, if you don't want them to. Sometimes, RP participents get bored with an RP and just leave it, and join another. That's OK. As long as people enjoy the RPing, that's the main thing.

Would someone please explain to me wut exactly these classes and seven races are? Then, I needa know wut you mean by "elemental types." It would be appreciated. :)

Well there are just simply differences in the stats between different races, classes and element types. For example, a fighter is a better hand-to-hand fighter than a bard; a half-orc has less intelligence than an elf, etc. Different races/classes/elements also gain different stats when leveling - some gain more HP, some more MP, some more strength, etc.

Secondly how do I do everything, I read the newbies forum thingy but didn't understand half of it. Mainly the parts about what you do in chat rooms and what each one does and is. Like the post by post. Would someone please specify what that is and how it works.

Thank you

Well we are similar to the site you mentioned. We do feature play-by-post RPs so there is commonality there.

As for how do you do 'everything', I think that's just a little time consuming to answer. With regards to RPs, you might want to read http://rpgforumsonline.game-host.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3511 - it might help.

If you have any specific questions, please ask.

OoooooKay - A bit Lost

Postby rickski » Fri Apr 13, 2007 11:05 am

Maybe I'm a bit lost and at the wrong site. I just want to talk about existing rpg systems what's good, what's not - ideas for campaigns and so forth. Can you do that here?
