We all enjoy games of various types, on various hardware, featuring various themes. And for some, gaming is a huge part of one's life. But do you worry that you may be addicted to video games? Discuss...

I dont find myself addicted to games but there is some lack of control issuse that I have with games. Like if I pick up a really good game like Elders Scrolls Three: Morrowind I played for like two months straight.

I do not think I am addicted to video games. I will play for hours straight, then sleep and play for again for extended periods of time. Then never touch the game again for months, then repeat.

It is kind of a viscious cycle...

If I lay hands to a good Rpg my friends think I am dead. I dissapear of the face of the earth. But this is the only time that it happens. I play all other types of games casually whenever I have a few minutes to play around with and am not reading.
Old World of Darkness (V:tM and WW:tA), D&D (standard, Eberron, Forgotten Realms and O.A.) Star Wars, Wheel of Time and Macross Rpg's

Not at all for me. I'd actually rather be hanging out with friends. Athough I do play video games a lot, I have more fun hanging out and doing fun stuff with my friends, so I'm not worried about being addicted. :p

Right. As at least one of these who have replied to this topic, I found myself all hooked on Morrowind. It was about half a year ago when I finally put it aside. The thing with games like that(open ended, it doesn't end once you've accomplished your main quest), is that you can add plugins and mods and continue playing it indefinately. And I think I had eventually more mods on the game than game itself. In any case, I once just took it off the computer and stopped obsessing about it. Games ARE addictive but you have to know when to stop.

Currently I am finishing my next obsession(almost sick with it): Knights of the Old Republic 2.

BTW, is there any way I can have my name Capitalized? :)

The one thing about addiction that most people overlook, both those pointing the finger and those being pointed at, is that the addiction takes the place of something that is missing from the addicts life. Be that attention from family, positive reinforcement, love, positive self esteem, or whatever is missing. Addiction is a natural response to something that makes you feel good about yourself even if you know what you are doing is wrong. It is not a simple matter to organize, come to terms with or conquer. Addiction comes in many forms and flavors from adrenaline to sex to games, to drugs and alcohol… the end response is a release of chemicals into the body that promote feelings of euphoria and happiness.

So if you believe you are addicted to something that is damaging maybe you need to reevaluate your life and the priorities there-in. It is a hard lesson for someone who is young and idealistic to learn but sometimes the greatest feeling as the ones given selflessly and without thought of reward. In a world where instant gratification is the norm learning to be patient and to listen can go a long way to helping anyone over an addiction to anything… even RPGFO… :-P

For me addiction has come and gone in many forms throughout my life. Right now my addiction is providing for my family. Funny how that happens isn’t it?

Anyway my two cents worth.

Like, games for systems/ consoles/ pc?

I used to be hardcore with video games, but eh... an ex of mine broke my xbox trying to put a dvd into the disk tray. Never got it fixed. And while I still have a SNES, PS1, Virtual Boy, Nintendo, N64, Gameboy (oldschool, pocket, color, DS) intact, I hardly touch them anymore.

I'd milk a Wii for all it was worth if I had one, though. My older brother visited from across the country, a couple months ago, and I think I miss the Wii more than I miss him (but then.. you can't talk to a Wii over the phone n stuffs).

Mrrr... I have other things I spend too much time with. Namely, RPGFO nowadays. Lol. Actually joined partly because my acting professor told me to write more, because it'd help me find new motives of expression on stage and be a more intelligent actress/performer.

Maybe I'm addicted to roleplay? I 'roleplay' irl as well as here, if you count acting.

As for something missing in my life... I have a lot of great things going for me, but everything is very routine. Roleplaying is a simple, free way to make me believe my life has some kind of edge to it, lol.

For a while I was addicted. Maybe for about 2-3 months I would avoid homework and just game. Hell, I wasnt even really eating. Once midterm report cards came out, I seen how low my marks were. Beings I was in high school I figured I better fix the problem, so I quite cold turkey. It was hard to do, but I needed my marks.
