That's true Ant, they often fought lions.

A few things from my research Desperado:

* Evidence suggests that women fought in the Roman arena as early as the first century AD. They are described as fighting from chariots or as bestiarii hunting lions during the opening games at the Colosseum.

* So some elite roman women may have trained as gladiators. But it does not seem that they routinely fought in the arena. Many of the women at Nero’s games are described as being forced, suggesting they were some sort of perverse novelty act thought up by the emperor.

* Novelty or not, this does suggest the possibility of a class of female gladiators who were not upper class amateurs. It is possible that the inspiration behind Petronius’s charioteer and Martial’s bestiarii represent a group of women who, like their male counterparts, fought in the arena as slaves or desperate volunteers.

* Whilst the ancient sources can be taken to suggest the possibility of professional female Roman gladiators, they do not prove it.

I'm happy to allow a female gladiator, but you would be treated like crap and like a novelty, as history dictates.

Merx... Good ;)

I'll put up a character sheet for your Domina and Dominus today.

Name: Quintus Achillius and Varinia Achillius
Age: 39 and 25
Gender: Male and Female
Appearance:
Quintus’ distinguishing feature is his one blue eye and one hazel. Varinia’s distinguishing feature is a birthmark shaped like a dove on her right shoulder blade, a sacred symbol of Rome. Some saw this as a symbol of the Gods favour.

Quintus, the Dominus

Varinia, the Domina

Back Story: Quintus and Varinia are the most physically mis-matched couple. He is old, slightly grissled and she is young, supple and beautiful. They have been married now for 9 years. Quintus’ mother bought Varinia off her family when she was only 11 and Varinia was his mothers body servant. When Varinia was 15, Quintus’ mother passed away and almost immediately he bargained with his father to allow Varinia to serve him. His father reluctantly agreed but was not pleased. Within the year, Quintus expressed his desire to marry Varinia. His father flatly refused, saying that to do so was to dishonor their house and their family. They were lanista’s, they had some respect and standing in society and for the heir of the most successful ludus in the city to marry a common slave was inconceivable.

When Quintus told Varinia that his father was not willing to allow them to marry, she was most upset and began to formulate a plan. Within the week she had convinced Quintus that the only thing they could do was to kill his father. They threw a party and invited his father’s competitors and were the greatest of hosts. They utilized a gift of wine from one of the competitors to slip poison into and then offered it to his father.

In one swoop, they were able to murder Quintus’ father and remove a serious competitor. Shortly after this Varinia and Quintus were married and they both took over the Ludus and continued to build up the House of Achillius to be one of the greatest Ludus’ in the city.

Name: Weylyn Ferehar
Age: 29
Gender: Male
Slave Status: Gladiator in Training.
Apperance: Weylen has a tattoo that is perched upon his right shoulder. His hands are thick with callouses from the hard labor he's done since he was young.
Image
Back Story: Weylyn Ferehar came from the stocks of a very poor family, one who had to work very hard just to stay a live and not be beggers. They were able to produce enough food for themselves and some of the local people around their village. Weylyn has always been lean and strong willed. Upon one trip to the city when he was older, he came across a young noble lady who caught his eye so much that it bedazzled him completely. Her name was Laelia.

After he inherited his family's farm and house, as they passed away due to illness that struck the region, he made another trip to the city. He tried upon several attempts to speak with Laelia, but always guards or other suitors brushed him aside with their guards. He left with more than one blackened eye. The only reason that he never did give up on this, was that she often flashed him a smile upon seeing him. At one trip, he was able to approach her home, but her father said in no small way that no one of such low breeding with no name for himself would ever gain his daughter's audience. Despite Weylyn's protest, the door was slammed shut into his face.

When he returned home, Weylyn had started to let the farm go. He had enough food to do him briefly, but Laelia's father words rang in his mind often. He was told to give up by the local villagers, that he wouldn't never amount to anything more than just a farmer in a low lying land. When this happened, he struck the man who said it and nearly beat him to death. Upon seeing this and his resolve to become something, he found that the only way he might do that was to become a gladiator. Gladiators were revered, those that became known for their exploits in the Arena, and he saw it fit that he would join their ranks. He packed what few belongings he felt he needed and went to one of the ludus's in the city under the name of Achillius and signed away his rights to be taught as a gladiator.

To be frank, he's a bit fantastical. The tribe is obviously made up, but every other thing historic I put in is true, including the island. Tell me what you think, Gid.
Name: Mok Thurule
Age: 22
Gender: Male
Slave Status: Gladiator
Apperance: Mok.
Under the mask, Mok has shoulder length black hair, straight and unkempt. His features are handsome. He has a long scar from his right cheek down to his neck.
Back Story: Born and raised on an island in the Arabian Sea by the name of Satadip, or as it was called by Nearchus, the Macedonian Admiral, Nosala. Though it was known to be uninhabited, and written down as so by the same Nearchus, the island was actually populated by a tribe of people called the Seg'uleh. At first intrigued by the strange people and their eccentric custom of wearing notched white porcelain-like masks, Nearchus soon found that a sneer of amusement meant a whole different thing to the young spokesperson that had approached him. Though to be true, even direct eye contact was usually enough to challenge. The iron swords flashed out and nearly took the man out. A short fight ensued that saw the small exploration crew annihalated. Only the admiral was left alive, and he had sworn never to visit again the island and leave it uncharted. The fleet never returned.

The Seg'uleh people were a warrior tribe, that much was certain. Through almost daily duels and the integral social hierarchy created and defined by them, the men and women of tribe grow up to peak physical fitness and fighting skill. The Seg'uleh young grow to learn use of the spear and net (important to fishing as well, and what would in the future make them unique gladiators), sling, and most importantly the dual swords. Rarely do they contact other peoples, but they do trade and engage in basic seafaring.

Hundreds of years after the incident with the Macedonians--Mok was an average Seg in his early childhood. Black of hair and brown of skin. He received his mask and swords whens he was five and began training under the Seg'uleh Second, who was often in charge of training the children. Soon as he began his training, Mok distinguished himself from the rest of the pack. He was stronger, quicker and a faster learner. He became skilled enough to begin practicing with older children, and even then he won half the times. When he was fifteen he entered the hierarchy of the tribe. He rose the numbers, becoming Fifth by the time he was eighteen--four marks marred his mask to record his rank. It was at that age that he embarked upon with two other, similarly aged Seg'uleh on a raid. On a boat not much larger than a canoe, the trio sailed to land, intent on challenging any warrior they could find--each must win a hundred duels before returning, as tradition dictated. It was a given that there was quite a high mortality rate. After two years and only twenty-nine matches Mok's pride deemed worthy to count as duels, only he remained of the raid. He had journeyed west, and it wasn't long before a hungry Roman eye spied the warrior fight. A nighttime ambush later and the young Seg was in chains and was taken to one of the many provincial arenas. He first understood what was happening when in Syria, as he was put to his first fight. But the slaver saw no resistance from him. He sliced the Arab gladiator near to death and left him there. The crowds and editor were too stunned by the quickness and elegance of the swordplay to stop Mok Thurule from leaving the stage. He was escorted to his cell until he was called for his next match.

In the next two years his "ownership" changed hands twice and his venue four times. He reached Rome and the Circus Maximus and began his fighting there. He was a spectacle, an exotic speciemen, though only averagely favoured by the crowds. He wasn't flamboyant enough, his Dominus Quintus used to say--by the time he reached Rome he understood Latin to a certain basic level, though nearly no words ever left his mouth. But he kept going. His count by then was sixty-eight.
All good hun. Quintus wouldn't allow him not to be flamboyant though. He would kinda insist on him pleasing the crowd. ;)

Well, I guess Mok would try a bit. Any real challenge to him would be a crowd pleaser though. He'd understand the situation that his sustenance is pretty much dependant on Quintus. Though his thinking is this: his chances of finding adequate duels in the arena are better than outside, so he stays in his position of servitude--but once he wins enough duels he is planning on escaping.

By the way, what would Mok's condition be in the Achillius household? Would he be free to wander in the house? Would he be constrained in a cell or a room? Would he be treated fairly? What do the Dominus and Domina think of him?

Just so I know. :P

The Gladiators are confined to their own part of the house. They do not have access to the Villa where the Domina and Dominus are unless they are summoned, but they are free to roam their quarters, showers, eating area and training ground. They aren't locked in cells all the time, but only when "idle". If they're not training, eating, in the arena or showering, they're expevted to be sleeping. They train all day. You'll be brought into the Villa when required, often during parties to look impressive or even entertain the guests. Sometimes trusted ones would be asked to act as guards for the Domina and Dominus when they go out.

Dominus would like Mok, as he likes all his gladiators. He favours those that elevate his standing or win many fights. He would, however, kill you for trying to escape. He would allow you to earn your freedom though.

Then that--the part about winning his freedom--might be better then for his storyline.

I'll get that up ASAP m'dear. Started a new position at work this week and it's been ALOT more hectic than it should have been. If it's not up tonight, it should be up tomorrow. No later than Sunday morning (which is my next day off).

All Central Standard Time which is.... GMT-5 or -6. I can never remember. Haha.

Sorry about the delay.

Name: Martinus
Age: 27
Gender: Male
Slave Status: Gladiator
Apperance: Martinus is a large man. Very large. Nearing almost seven feet, with broad shoulders, a thick, barreled chest, and limbs the size of tree trunks, he is easily picked out in a crowd. He weighs just over 200 pounds, and one would be hard pressed to find any fat on his body. His entire body is clean shaven, and oiled daily to bake in the sun, giving his skin a deep bronzing that glistens magnificently during a fight. He wears little more than an armored loincloth and a great helm when fighting, and a simple tunic and short trousers most other times.

Back Story: Martinus grew up as a slave. He has known no other life, nor does he desire any. An orphan, he was sold into slavery at the tender age of 5. By the time he was 10, and well on his way to 6 feet in height, his owner decided he would make a fine warrior some day.

His training started that day, and has continued every day of his life since. He has been owned by several masters over the years since then, and began fighting in the arena when he was 16. By 20 he was a champion in the smaller competitions. By 25 he was contender for highest honors amongst the more notable arenas.

His current owner, Dominus Quintus, has possessed him for the last 6 years of his life, purchasing him for a good price after a year of fighting undefeated as a champion in the smaller arenas. Now he fights exclusively at the call of Dominus Quintus.

And he is satisfied. The man is quiet and reserved, barely saying anything to anyone unless directly asked a question. He seems to live to fight.... And fight he does, exceedingly well. His bulk and muscle limit his mobility somewhat (though he still moves much quicker than many people think someone of his size should be able to), what he lacks in speed and finesse he more than makes up for in power and brutality. Though he has trained with nearly every gladiatorial weapon, his preferred weapon is the menaulion, one crafted specially for him. The entire weapon is crafted of iron, wrought as a single piece. Its weight is enough to dissuade most opponent from trying to use it against him if it is dropped....and many have fallen trying to do just that. He carries no shield, but instead uses the metal haft of the weapon to deflect or block even the sturdiest of strikes.

His life is good now, better than he has ever known......But to one who knows nothing but conflict, it is never enough. Until he is champion of all, he will not be satisfied.

He knows nothing else, and wants nothing else.

((The above backstory likely needs tweaking, and a little better specifics. I wanted to at least get a rough draft up for you Gideon, so you could see if you like my concept. I usually go over my backstories a few times before I post them, tweaking and what not, but I simply don't have time this evening.

If you see any inconsistencies, please let me know and I'll work on them tomorrow when I have more time. Thanks!))

Oh, another thing I wanted to ask. What date is this taking place? I'm guessing around 1st or 2nd century AD, or is that wrong?
