Inappropriate Criticism, Rudeness and Abusive Behaviour

Postby Ozental » Thu Jul 14, 2005 4:41 pm

It is with a somewhat heavy heart that I must write this post. We've had several situations whereby some members are writing what I feel are inappropriate criticisms of other members, their posts and/or their role-plays. This is often followed by foul language, rudeness and other abusive behaviour, perhaps from both sides of the [s]discussion[/s] argument.

We all need to remember that there are various types of people here, with very different backgrounds. This therefore means that skills in role-playing ability, as well as non-role-playing posts, can produce various quality levels of content, realism, language, spelling and the like. Some members here are new RPers and have never written an RP sentence in their lives before. Whilst we always strike for excellence, it is not helpful to post 'put down comments' or argue whether an RP is realistic enough or good enough for the forum. At the end of the day, people will join in RPs that suit them, their style and their interests. If you don't like the way the RP is run or the type of RP, then don't contribute to it.

We need to encourage not discourage. No one would complain about helpful and pleasant suggestions that are worded appropriately, but no one likes in-your-face criticism. And remember, we do have moderators that handle things that they and/or I think are inappropriate, so it's not really a 'standard' members place to make those choices.

If you have an issue with another member that you would like to discuss, please PM me privately so we can all talk the problems sensitively and calmly. Public slanging matches via posts, the Shoutbox or PMs to other members is not the way forward. Please be aware, that inappropriate criticism, rudeness, abusive behaviour and blatant disregard for the ethos of this site will result in punishment and potential banning from this site.

In summary I believe one statement sums up my feelings on this: "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all."

This is exactly why I left Ayenee a while back. The administrators tried to qualm the flaming, but it's hard to do that when some of your moderators are contributing to it. The site lost it's focus and purpose. I hope the same doesn't happen here, and I think it won't because your mods seem to be level-headed enough to do their job.

same happened to me on some other forums that i enjoyed and loved, i invited my mates everyone starting arguing, it went from titter tatter, to racial and ethnic abuse, to personal comments, to death threats, the lot.

I must agree with Oz on this one. I'm tired of the flaming as well, but there are always those people who are hard-headed (including me), at times. I understand and digression is advised. :)

Yeah, anyone could just lose it. But, it is very unexpectable for someone to blow up or criitize the other poster.

Unless it's called for. Even then there has to be a polite way to do it.

I'm guilty of harsh words myself, on occasion. (I'll be good from now on, I promise.) You are right, there is no reason flaming and harassment should be tolerated. We should behave like civilized adults. (I sound like my parents...)

I promise, this won't happen here. It's something I'm very fixed on. If anyone has an issue, as I said in the main post, PM me - it will be actioned and the offending user is likely to be banned immediately, if they show no sign of remorse or changing their habits.

I agree with everything except for this statement.

Ozental wrote:"If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all."

If people had gone by that saying, we'd still have Nazi Germany.

Haha, true I should, but that saying isn't the best one to use, as was demonstrated.

:) In a way, yes, but I am still bound by saying positive things- no matter how awkward things get.

Perhaps we listen to the jist of Oz's post and remember if you can't say something positive then just leave it PM Oz and let him deal with it. Then the administrators can do the appropriate thing and deal with the situation.
Go Oz this is a great site and it would be a shame if it was ruined by a few.

I totally agree with Treebeard. I'm also glad he has some tolerance with people who mess up just once.

Well I'm not sure I'm quite Hitler. I guess the difference is that if someone doesn't like the rules of this site, they can leave.

Hey hey hey - don't start comparing us to Nazi Germany. If people went by the phrase 'If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all', Nazi Germany would never have happened.

So let's keep it chilled, guys. I personally have better things to do with my time than try to break up arguments, I do enough of that at home.

Is it just me or do I feel some heat in the Innappropriate thread? That's very awkward.
