Melee vs Magic

Postby Ozental » Mon May 09, 2005 11:15 am

We can't always have it all. Sure, we'd like to be strong, intelligent, agile, handsome, athletic and wonderous, but sometimes we need to make choices. So, with regards to melee or magic, which would you rather be?

Bit of both.... i like magic enough that id be strong in it, but also if things got sticky id like to be able to fight my way out
I must turn now to where the angels fly, singing in a singular voice, I become wrapped in the love and tenderness so often missing from my life, but now, one impure thought sends me hurtling back through the cloud filled canopy, back down to the purgatory of life.

I see magic as boundless (which is untrue in most games...) but I agree with air, you need to be able to back out of something with some physical force once in awhile... Magic can't give you everything

I actually voted for powerfull melee w/no majic skills. But, a wee bit would be usefull for those pesky out of Bow range peolpe. Darn them anyhow...

But, I would rather rely on myself than have to depend on another to do their part. Sounds selfish, but I know my limits and what I expect.

I'd want to be strong magically, but I'd still want to be able to fight my way out if things got a little too close-quarters.

Well I think magic can be relied upon to much at times, where as if you are a good melee fighter then you know your limitations, magic can be abused and sometimes can end up ruling the user, so I would have to go with melee.

I think a balance of the two. I want both and don't like to be without one.. besides which, it's good to know a little about everything.

Solid magic.

In a good role-playing game, magic is boundless as long as the character has the knack and ambition to research and develop spells for any situation. It also has to do with the player's skills and regarding playing the character class.

In the last D&D campaign I played, I had a mage that only got injured once during the whole campaign. That happens when my mage was still lower level (2nd or 3rd) and he had to "jump" down a 60ft. deep whole to save the group's "big fighter" from a scarab swarm that he otherwise wouldn't have survived the encounter with. Good times...

Magic is useful, but it is not right for all situations

I would perfer to be in the centre of the fight using melee or to the side with a bow, magic requires concentration and study, combat requires training and practice. I said i would like Strong Melee and a little bit of magic (it has its uses)

yes magic does come in handy but, most the time it does not get the job done.

If only I could drag you into playing a D&D session with me. I'd show you how a pure magic character can rule a battlefield.

I think players just have to have a knack to play mages well. I've seen a lot of players try and fail miserably... You just have to think outside the normal. Players who rely on solid combat spells miss out on so much.

For example: I think its fun getting through that "locked door" that you aren't suppose to open yet by melting the lock with a low damage acid spell. Tends to keep the DM/GM on their toes...

Doesnt get the job done, huh? Have you ever player Final Fantasy? Have you ever cast spells like, Flare, Holy, and Meteor? Guess not... Well, I prefer someone who is skilled in magic, but is not helpless in toe to toe combat. Never underestimate magic though.
Yea, youd like me to have a signature wouldn't you.

That complety differnt, I have played and enjoyed the final fantasy series. Those do get the job done but, normal crapy spells do do as well.

I would like to be more magical, but without melee? That's too crazy for me.

Fight, why would want to fight, passive resistance is the only true way. One must free himself of violence to reach Wisdom in her house.

Between the two, I love divine help, so I be a holy man.

A abhor violence, and feel that people should just turn the other cheek when the first gets raw.

Have you been to my Academic class lately, you might learn to feel the same way. :D

Melee vs Magic

Postby Eternal Hunter » Sat Sep 09, 2006 1:37 am

I choose strong Magic with some Melee. I've always played mages and find that it suits me. Also I think they generally do better most of the time in an overall kind of situation. Anyways, it's really all about preferences.

I'm all melee, I prefer it and if ever I am forced to use the hat tricks, i prefer stuff that is combative. you'd see me with a great sword instead of a wand everytime.
