Orcish Language

Postby SuperDrops » Tue Apr 29, 2008 11:55 am

OK, so I'm designing a world, something I do often, maybe not well, but enjoy much, and I'm trying my hand at language creation. The language I am trying to create is, in various accents, spoken by this worlds orcish populace. I want the language to SOUND primitive but have an actually very refined grammar. Most of the words should consist of hard sounds, like K's, P's and S's. I'm also thinking about making a hero/ine it's own gender, making it a total of four, Male, Female, Neutral and Heroic.
Can anybody give me any pointers as to what I should consider while creating a language, or maybe any literature I can read on the topic?

Possibly something like Blizzard's Warcraft could help you out there. The orcs talk sort of how you're thinking, but it's english with orcish phrases thrown in fo rthe most part.

Either way, it could help you to check around Blizzard and Warcraft sites to see if there is something to get you going along on your project.

the closes thing you will find with Blizzard/World of Warcraft Orcish language will be here:

http://www.wowwiki.com/Orcish

but perhaps it will give you enough of a start or an idea to build/create your own form of orcish -smiles-

Possibly limit it to: A, B, D, F, G, H, I, K, M, N, O, P, R, S, T, U, V, X, Z.

Maybe base it off Hungarian or German, a tounge with many hard sounds.

GM: You have failed the agility test, therefore a large black man gone stole your bike.

I would stick with pigeon English and keep the Orc language simple, but menancing. That way it is easy to understand but clearley not exactly English.
