this actually made me think of Gaia Online for some reason.
I thought way back when that we could use the points to pay for requests. and then the shop owners could maybe put that in a pool for some kind of lottery?
I don't know I have more ideas than I can sort still >_<

but I thought it would be could if we could have like "avatars" and we buy things from a "shop" with points.. but i think that would maybe take away from the RPG factor? idk.

just spewing out thoughts!

Just remember, with merchandise guys, it would all have to be bought/made originally. I refused to have to charge people for membership to the site. But please bear costs in mind before considering merchandise. I'd like to do it, and many things could be very easily done cheaply. Perhaps bigger things, like shirts/big posters/mugs/bags could be done for special events or as prizes.

Well, I noticed a lot of people praising our community here, both in this threat and in the other one. Why not name the new forum for that? RPGNation, RPG Tavern or RPG Community? RPG Realms perhaps, if we're feeling archaic?

As for features, I can't really think to suggest anything new. I do have a couple requests though, based both on things I've seen here and elsewhere. Firstly, can we make certain buttons more evident? I was surprised to find RPGFO has a "Favorites" and a "Download" button when I first came here. Sadly, this keeps surprising me, because the font's so small I keep forgetting they're there.
Secondly, I'm not sure if we'll have enough people for it, but I think we should have a podcast if we see a bit of life. The one here is seldom updated, and I never really noticed it, but if I were a young RPer again with no idea on how to properly write or cooperate with others, I'd appreciate some material I could turn to for reference before leaping in. Not to mention it would be a good way to hear some unfamiliar voices with familiar names talk about nerd ephemera (books, TV shows, movies and games, etc) and forum goings-on. It would be some work, but it would definitely add to our sense of community. At times, entrenched communities can scare off new RPers, but a feeble sense of community never attracts new ones.
Lastly, could we have an art and a story section? It would be a handy way to share some of our work, whether for RPGs or just to display our own talent?

I'm probably far too ambitious. I've never run a website, only occasionally posting random incoherent thoughts on them, but the worst that's likely to come out of a bad idea on my end is one more tick on my Posts count, and one or two aggrevated comments, right? :P

That will depend on the theme and style of the board, but so far this layout is quite clear.

We will definitely be looking into a podcast once we are established. In terms of reference material, there will be a library which will be updated regularly with relevant tid-bits. There will also be mentors on hand to assist with new members.

We already have that here and we do have that on the new site. The Printing Press and the Artisans Guild.

These are all really good ideas.

Mike and I used to create the Podcast but it soon fell into the ground when we ran out fo things to do rather quickly due to lack of member input. I would be willing to start this up again as I found it pretty fun to create and I didn't mind funding it myself in order to get the extra storage space to be able to actually host a podcast properly. So when I have more time in the new year it may be something I consider seriously again as I can record & edit a 10min sequence in a night when I have the days off to do so- thoughours have lasted half hour before haha.

However, subject matter has been an increasingly difficult thing to find- aside from the obvious christmas, new years, halloween and, on occasion, Quill Awards that we had discussed in our old Podcasts.

overall it's not a half bad idea but would require a ton of commitment from whoever was making it.

A few things:

1. Points from this site - Cannot happen without database access and some serious knowledge to extract and move such a massive quantity of data. Additionally, finding a method to port it into the new site, borderline impossible.

2. Name, how about things without the G since the games indicates that we play RPG's when really we roleplay. Unless you feel like branching out into games too? Could do Roleplay Genesis (RPGenesis) if you still want the G lol.

3. Use EXTREME care with choosing a host. Hosting packages can seem all very similar, they are not! Server access, allowed protocols, restrictions on methods, etc all have to be considered. Otherwise you can find that the site cannot and will not support the forum as you want it too and may suddenly impose some very serious limits on the sites prompting another move. So I stress EXTREME care must be taken with reasonable knowledge. Database size is a classic problem, a Play by post forum will create a gargantuan database in no time at all. Email restrictions are often a problem. Bandwidth can sometimes be a problem but not too often.

Don't really have anything else to add to what's already been said, other than I do like the name of RolePlay Genesis that UA just mentioned.

Also, I wanted to wish you all luck with getting the site up.

In terms of podcast ideas, I would always be happy to try and stir the pot, always one for making excitement even if I can't directly do anything about it meow

You bring up some good points UA.

I don't hate Roleplay Lounge either, actually. Simple, comfortable... Kinda homey :)

Names
I think the name RPGNation (Madrigal's idea) is awesome, but I'd shorten it to RPNation, also RolePlay Genesis (UA's idea) is cool.

That's all I've got.

RPGenesis has a certain ring to it that I quite like, but I also really like RP Lounge.

I like the suggestions, and I like seeing the input everyone. I think I speak for everyone on the moderating team when I say that we are excited to implement new features and functionality on the new forum. If you have even the slightest notion of an idea, bring it to the table!

I'd be interested in doing more podcasts, they were fun to do, even though Train did all of the actual work and I just provided my voice...

Okay, if there's going to be a podcast then whoever does it has to go into it realizing that an internet fourm isn't really going to generate enough content to keep a podcast going on it's own. It's not sustainable, unless the release schedule is pretty slow. However, the world of literature and RPGs is a wide one in deed, and that, I believe, is where a podcast that finds its home on this fourm should look for the bulk of its content.

It's something the people here should have a common interest in, and something I'd be willing to help out with whenever I can, though my current situation doesn't allow me to regularly contribut to something like a podcast.

Podcasts? But those flounder with lack of input; why not go the whole hog and make it an internet radio station? Stream songs, get volunteer DJs, host radio-only competions and add a radio chat room. That last bit is important: you need a way for listeners to interact in real-time.

Add in radio-only badges, or something, and you have a pretty good thing going. Mike's already said he likes giving his voice; why not his taste in music, too?

It could also be a way to disseminate announcements quickly, or talk about current events for the benefit of those of us who live in caves.

Edit: I like The Lost Archives as a name; it gives the place an epic, slightly library-esque, fantasy feel. I was going to suggest The Echoing Halls, but that's what I call my own offline information archive. It's very big.

Personally, I like The Lost Archives, in part because it actually isn't a forum that already comes up when you google search it (whereas Roleplay Lounge comes up as 'an erotic playground for couples!'). D:

Thus once again proving that google is your friend when picking a name for a site.

I like the idea of having our own radio station, and I have tried to impose my music tastes on the podcasts we did do.

Another option is to stream something using Twitch.tv. I know it's predominantly a computer game streaming site, but I've seen people livestream podcast recordings using that. Granted they were all in the same room to do it, but I'm sure it's an avenue we can explore.

Unfortunately it is also he name of an Assassin's Creed game and thus that's always going to dominate search results.

Perhaps we should take the names suggested so far, compile them, do a google search for ones that might already exist, and then do a vote on the ones that remain?

I reiterate, podcasts need full time work and a radio station style podcast would take up your entire storage allowance and then some- as the one editing this all last time round- I'm going to quietly oppose to uploading many gigabytes worth of of stuff and increasing the storage allowance on a weekly basis to run out of content a month down the line.

Live streaming is a good idea and I could probably find a better way of doing that- I shall take a look into it and converse with Mike- we'll he track to you on that, I want to interact with members as much as possible, a way of interacting could be hosting a group Skype session or, if you are part of the twitterverse, I will be creating a Twitter account for the new forum when we settle on a name and you can all use the hashtag system when we say we are streaming so say something like #AskToT @RPArchives blah blah blah

So there's ways to interact and I'll find more because I think we need to be big on the social media if we are to kick off

So RP Radio might be a thing in the near future? Maybe I should suggest making our own browser-based, volunteer-driven MMORPG involving characters from the site. Because that would be awesome, and I always enjoy eating new people.

Meeting new people. I meant meeting new people.

I think Winamp had a live-stream recorder the last time I checked, but that hasn't been for quite some time, so you might not have to worry about storage. I'm sure that someone could end up recording your streaming events as a podcast before hosting it somewhere [s]impractical[/s] for you.

I would also caution against planning or promising too much. Collecting ideas is great but some of them will take a long time lol. And internet radio is a big undertaking with little reward for quite some time but still a cool idea.

Care and patience would be the fundamentals of any advise I would offer. Do steps, get X working, prove people like it, then Y etc. Offer too much work with not enough reward and things may struggle. Also we don't want the site becoming too removed from the whole roleplaying thing ;) as that is the point right?
