Role-Play Genres

Postby Ozental » Tue Nov 15, 2005 10:20 am

As you know, there are many forms of role-play and our beloved site features just a few key types of role-play genre. There is "traditional" which is based above fantasy themes along the lines of LotRs, featuring wizards, thieves and warriors, orcs, goblins and elves, etc. There is "modern" with settings like World of Darkness. "Realistic" or "historic" typically features true-to-life settings of the Wild West, Dark Ages, Japanese eras, World Wars, etc. Then there is good old "Sci-Fi" as well as "Mature" themes which may involve graphic violence, abusive language and sexual content. Naturally within each of these genres, there are sub-genres and themes making the worlds available within role-play sites almost limitless.

So the question to you is, not specifically thinking of this site but all role-play experiences that you have, what is your favorite role-play genre?

The Sci-Fi category. The research involved for a good sci-fi is hard, but if you focus and work towards it, it makes for some of the best playing and opposition I've ever seen. The Modern is based on luck, Traditional is relient on magicks and myths. But the Sci-fi stands alone, in it's own category within itself.

I like them all, but mainly traditional Fantasy. Sci-fi is close behind.

I'm a fan of Sci-Fi and my longest running game is in that. Primarily, I think Traditional/Fantasy is more restrictive than Sci-Fi and depends on a common assumption about things; Sci-Fi allows a great deal of freedom, gives you the chance to play any number of sub-genres with different "feels" and play something else than your usual Elf, Orc, Drawf, etc...

I like playing RPs where the gap between black-and-white is wide and where you can actually inject social commentary into the RP. I also have a preference for thinking more tactically in combat scenarios and lethal games which is not usually part of Traditional RPs.

My favorite (and apparently only me as I'm the only vote) is the gothic/vampire genre. The reason being that characters of these natures can exist within pretty much all the other genres. "A vampire in Sci-Fi?" you might wonder... Ever seen the movie Dracula 3000?

Sci-Fi is my second choice with Traditional Fantasy my third. Now that I have this new book, I might have to start an RP using some of its material...

I think Sci-Fi just barely edges out traditional fantasy but thats only because I'm kind of "in" to starwars right now because of Battlefront 2

Adult roleplay, because you can have any theme with it but with no restriction in the story, anything could happen and you can developp in any detail you want.

Personally I love all kinds of RP's It depends on my mood at the time as to which is my favorite. Honestly I usually prefer violence and killing to sexual themes but lets face it, sometimes I get in the mood for that to.

I enjoy adult and vampire/gothic... but mainly adult because you're free do RP the way you want and can make it really intersting and fun.

I chose Other because my favorite Genre is Horror. Roleplaying it can be a challenge, and the genre by it's definition is highly emotional intensive making things far more interesting.

After that it draws between Noir and Gothic. I'm a big fan of WoD and GURPS Screampunk for it's Gothic feel. Noir is rarer to come by (Though CoC sometimes uses it, thus combining it with horror) though Cyberpunk often has a Noir feel to it.

I prefer the more traditional fantasy settings, though occasional infusion of more technology or other slight additions doesn't bother me in the least

I prefer traditional, but play sci-fi as well. I really didn't consider adult a genre but more a category within a genre, but i guess it could be now that I think about it a little more.

When it comes to Role Playing the setting is the thing that brings you the the game you stay in the game to change the world your character is in as well as take something from it. I like playing many different worlds to get a feel for the world around me in real life. Role plays in traditional format let us reflect on the magical aspects of life, as Modern format lets us use what we know of our world as it it is now with a few element of the insane to magical. The sicfi format give the chance to go beyond to new worlds, and historical format let us live in the histroy of our rich world.

Mature format let's us let go of all the norms and moors the bind us to be proper in the world at large. I feel role playing in one of all the format let us experence the world in a whole new way as well as take something back in a learning experience. I have discovered much about myself as learned a lot from others by role playing in many different formats with many different people of all types and lifes.

I like to think that role playing is a great way to meet people and learn understanding of the world and the things in it, so what do the rest of you think?

I'll play just about anything that looks good but I can get turned off to a good genre or system/style by a bad presentation. Right now I'm big on RIFTS and other Palladium based games, which the Palladium system covers every genre.

Traditional fantasy, but historic/realistic will also do, as well as adult fantasy.

I really like ones that are based on D&D, and World of Warcraft.
They're fun, because it's often a group of people who are good, fighting an evil who will almost definately kill at least one of them.
Maybe i just like it because i always play the rather shadey characters who seem quite unusuall, but they fight with the good guys.

Trad fantasy. I also like sci-fi RPs. Mature fantasy is groovy as long as people don't just use it as an excuse to cyber

Sci-Fi. I'll do almost anything but I enjoy that better. Historic/Realistic I don't really like at at all.

It's all good. I like the stuff like in The Elder Scrolls (obviously), but it's all fun. Quite honestly, the Elder Scrolls is what got me into fantasy to start with.
