Sephiroth was never a villain to begin with. He was a Soldier who went mad with grief for finding out he was a bit more then a human. Once he found out of this betrayal of man, he descided to get revenge upon the people who destroyed his life. The real villains are those who experiment on people's lives without permission, a villain is that of a person who descides to twist cells to perfect human combatants...Hell...Hojo was more villainous then Sephiroth...Lucrecia was more villainous then Sephiroth who allowed the experiment to continue on her son...

I beleive you should delve more into what a 'Villain' is...instead of doing it by how a character looks or what he does. This is of course, my opinion. I did not vote for the mere fact that the others are just fill ins.

I have to agree with Plague. Sephiroth may be a kick ass villain (certainly my personal favourite), but he is not the most evil. The only reason Sephiroth does the things he does is because he is misguided and emotionally unstable. Hojo is certainly the most evil, simply because he performed horrific experiments out of his own free will. Sephiroth misinterprets the information he finds in the library and therefore is unwillingly forced into his state of mind.

Sephiroth believes he is doing good. He believes that the current human 'traitors' essentially killed the Cetra (who he believes to be his ancestors) and he wants to get revenge and put things right. Hojo, on the other hand, knows that he is playing God and performing horrible experiments and is, in my opinion, more evil. Sephiroth may kill people, but Hojo does much worse by experimenting on all the members of Soldier and such.

Anyway, that's what i think. Kind of. Oh, and on the thing about Seph VS Kefka, both of 'em were cool. Both nearly became god-like creatures at the end of the games and both slaughtered load's of people. If it's a question of who is more evil, Kefka wins, but personally i tink Sephiroth is a better villain, simply because he is extremley mentally distrubed and presents a more dangerous persona. He tries to destroy the planet, has such a strong will that he can survive even after death (twice, depending on whether you believe the second one's a clone or not) and then manages to spread his essence all over the planet.

Well, i've rambled on too much, so i'll shut up now.

'misguided feeling' isn't that like the super villian creed? Did you ever stop to think that Hojo believed he was doing good with his experiments? It amazing how evil one simple deed can turnout to be just by thinking you're doing good. Take Hitler, for example, he believed he was doing good the first time around. The christian invaders that took over britain, then ireland and scotland enslaving the people killing thousnads believed they were doing good. Some of the biggest and baddest of the villians are just 'misguided' that does not change the evilness of their actions. If any of the villians won their actions would be seen as good honest and heroic, so just how 'misguided' can they be?

I never said that Sephiroth wasn't a villain because he was misguided. If you read what i said properly, you'll see that i said there is a difference between Sephiroth and Hojo in terms of evil. Sephiroth is effectively 'tricked' into being evil, whereas Hojo is evil regardless. As for Hojo believing he is doing good, that is a question of whether you are looking at it in moral terms or from point of view. Of course to Hojo it would seem as though injecting people with cells in order to make them super warriors is doing good, but moraly what he does is wrong whether he thinks so or not.

I don't know if that makes any sense but i'm not arguing about it any further. That's not the point of this topic. I think that Sephiroth is one of the best villains of all time, not neccessarily the best but most definitley my favourite.

Why not argue about it? I always loved a good philosophical debate. Though the guy is right, Most evil people and convicts dont think of themselves as evil. Go to Sing Sing prison and damn near every one of them has a reason for what they did

???

Morality is sudject from person to person, there is no set moral standard, Other wise people would not do evil because it is immoral. Sorry if I came across as tryign to argue but I think a discussion over what exactly makes a villian can add to the meaning and understanding of this thread.

That's cool, i didn't want to argue either but you're right. What makes a villain depends on your point of view and such. Morality is determined by a persons point of view, for example, we (or at least, i) have been brought up to believe that killing people is wrong, as is theft, vandalism and whatever else. However, if i had been brought up being told that killing people is a good thing, obviously if i killed someone it wouldn't be immoral, it would be right. I think i've explained that, hope you understand what i mean.

Outside the "cool" looks and such, Sephiroth was a generally bland and uninspired villain.

Whenever a villain looks cool enough, fanboys will flock around him and think he's awesome.

I call this the Sephiroth effect.

i guess you are right about the sephiroth affect coz there are a lot of peole who basicly worship him

one of my mates i know his name is vincent and he has paid load of money i think about 12 grand to look like him
he got the hair done plastic surgery on his face and he got his blade made and other stuff done as well and i dont see the point in it really spending heaps of money just to look like him

Then name the most recent original inspired villian. Sephiroth works well within the story he is used, he's not much good in anything else because he was made for that story. Yes he's an insane super solider, but he is the perfect counter part to the hero he is fighting. However, your friend Count is a very big loser that deserved to lose his money, no offence intended, and if I were you I would slap him about every time I saw him. It makes me sad that there are people in this world that would do that.

hmm damn I missed out the whole moral debate..typical..Sephiroth is my favourite Final Fantasy villian, he may not be the best designed or acted villian but still he was very good at his job in FF7.
Maybe its cause 7 was the first one I played.
Though Shining Force 2 had a rather good villian in Oddeye true he wasn't truly evil nor was he even the final boss but he was a very well crafted character in my eyes.
True I don't really like villians nor heros but the ones caught walking the fine line between the two.

Kefka was awesome. Unlike Sephiroth, he actually DID cause the end of the world, and still wanted to destroy it even more!! He isone of the most evil characters I have ever known in the FF series.

Sephiroth will always be the greatest villian of all time, because even if FF7 was made in 1997 (it's been that long?!?!) FF7 won't ever die. Ever!

Of the Final Fantasy villians I know Sephiroth the best.....actually, he is the only one I know, but I still like him all the same. I don't think he is so much as bland as he is cold.

More of less he is thinking "Screw it, let's blow up the world. I don't really give a crap."

So nobody likes Kefka. At least here. Everyone I know that played FF3 loved Kefka. You all love Sephiroth because he was 3-D. If Kefka was 3D, he would be the best. Because as storyline goes, he was the best.

I find Sephiroth far inferior to Kuja Tribal of Final Fantasy IX. I find Kuja a more intricate, original villain, who develops more.
Sephiroth is pissed off, he destroys a planet.
Kuja is pissed off, he destroys all existence.
