Sex and RPGs

Postby Ozental » Tue Feb 21, 2006 5:32 pm

RPGs - it's what PCs and consoles were made for. Yeah, it's all very well imagining the setting as if you were reading a fantasy book or partaking in a table-top game but for most of us, we love 'visuals'.

And then there are the characters and their backgrounds, which can often make a good RPG into a great, classic. But when playing RPGs, does having a buxom woman or a hunk-of-a-guy at your control make your RPG experience more enjoyable?

When I first started playing RPGs, no. Now is a different story. My tastes in RPs have taken a turn to the more erotic, what can I say, I met a guy and it's all I think about now. So, naturally, my interests would reflect that.

Ozental, from the title I thought you were talking about the use of sex in RPGs (like GTA and the special "health pick-me-up"), rather than controlling a superficially appealing character.

In that case, I pick "No." It's the character's personality and how he/she progresses through the story that garners my enjoyment - independent of that person's "hotness" factor. Controlling the Prince from Prince of Persia' is, though not an RPG,a perfect example - relatively good-looking, hunky, lithe guy with that aura of alluring mystery swaying across his bangs. But I didn't care for that - it was the character's introspection, storytelling, and his tete-a-tete with Farah that made it truly enjoyable.

Plus I don't project my sexual & sensual desires on a game.

No, I usually skip out on the Love idea of a roleplay unless that's the EXACT point of the Roleplay. My characters usually avoid the opposite sex, just because my characters are usually alone.

I'm not sure if you're talking about Role Plays or console games, but I'm going to rant about console games...

Not really, I would much prefer a good story line than some cliche characters. Actually, it kind of annoys me that every RPG game has some sort of conflicting love interest going on. Save the world, defeat the bad guy, AND get the girl.

I'd have to say, yes, yes it does. Being a teenager, all I think about is girls anyways, so if the game has a hot chick in it (or more) its going to be a slight swaying factor, eventhough I dont buy many games anymore. I look at it this way- Hot chick vs. Ugly chick. Both measure about the same except looks (Plot-wise). Theres an obvious winner. :p

I find it helps me imagine what there character looks like when they are "hot" then when they're ugly. Mostly because I can't picture ugly things in my head with out modifying a few million things. but other than that what the character looks like makes no difference to me.

When I really want to play a game, I sometimes find the girls......distracting. I don't want to be playing an ugly character for hours at a time either so its hard to decide what to do. I think the designers did that to up the difficulty of the game.

I really don't think it should matter too much. I'm sort of sick of hearing people flirting around and school and such, it bugs me, especially when it is at a very young age. xD To tell you the truth, I think its a lot more amusing having mysterious characters with some weaknesses to make an adventure rp a lot more interesting, rather than everyone trying to make their character with the ‘ideal figure’, if you get my meaning. But that’s just my opinion – some emotional conflict is interesting in rps, as well. I guess its best to try it all, though.

Love, flirting, sex and all that stuff are parts of life, and since Rping mostly try to resemble some kind of life, it can do nice things. After all, the power of love keeps the vampires from your door. Or something. Of course, it isn't appropiate in all settings. Flirting wildly in heavy action sequenses or describing your incredible sexy look during a desperate robbery can probably be more irritating than good. But love is nice, innit, and beauty, well, ...

*Ducks to avoid major hail of punches from girlfriend*

But I don't mind sex bombs (or hunks, for that matter) What nags me about this is all the attempts at playing the cardboard-stereotypes of beauty with as much personality as buckets of water. It gives me a nasty taste of plastic in the mouth. This world (the real world) is too filled with girls (and boys) acting and looking fake, why does it have to spill over into this world (the not so real world)?

Ehrm, no, its not. A fake is a fake is a fake is still fake. Ever heard the word "Personality" before?

Tomb Raider a nice game though, even though it sucks, so "it" probably has some effect.

What does personality have to do with it being easier to look good in games? Just because it sucks doesn't mean you can't look pretty sucking. (....That last sentence doesn't sound to good, but its the only way I could think of wording it)

Hmm, my point got lost somewhere here. In short: Beauty is nice. Sexyness is nice. Feelings are nice. Personality is nice. Fake is bad. Stereotypes are bad. So if some stereotype cardboard sexy character like (*thinks* can't think of an example right now, but there has to be something in f.i. Neverwinter Nights) walked into my RPG, I'd get a bit tired and a bit pissed. I don't play games because I want to see sexy girls, I play games mainly because of the stories in them. And if the story is an erotic one, that can nice as well. But the story still has to be good, otherwise it just turns into cheap wannabe-porn.

All in all, my answer is that no, a buxom woman alone does not make my RPG experience more enjoyable, I need a story as well, it's the role-playing story of the charachter that matters.

But by all means, yes you're free to look pretty sucking (yeah, bad wording), but it's much better if you're pretty good, and ugly good and pretty ugly and so on. Wasting 100 hours of work-time on some buxom womans buxom instead of making her story so good that you end up marrying her nontheless is just plain stupid.

*Receives several kicks by girlfriend* Okay, got to go.

I have to agree with you there, Chilimacho. Just because there are pretty women with no personality in it doesn't mean its a good game.....but it helps.

I feel that a good love story between characters can bring a new flavor to the game play. It has been seen in many moves and games like Mortal Kombat, FFX, Skies of Arcadia, Breath of Fire 3 and 4 to name a few. If the story is intograted in to the actoin you see character gain more power and abilites as well as the story take surprizing turns and twist as the elemnts come together.

The other side of that is if the story is one sided love with no hope of every being returned it makes the story a little boring and not a fun adventure.

If I have a NPC the is suppose to be a love interest for my character but is not working in the story I will take steps to get the NPC away from my character and the story so it may follow better but if it work in the story I will keep it.

The way I see that is the NPC should be designed and played withe player in mind as well as where the story going by have those to come together, if done properly it can make a great story better.

Npt always in some case a hot woman can slow the story down or even take some where it's not supposed to go or be. the player or NPC should fit in even if their there as a plot point or side story.

Yes, it's always nice to have something to stare at as you grind through battles and walk through unexplorered terrains. That's probably the only reason I ever finished DQ8. XD Set Jessica as an on screen character and watch her run!
