The Al-Bhed language

Postby e-realmz » Sat Jan 21, 2006 6:17 am

Well since I am in the mist of a new-to-me installment of the Final Fantasy series (X and X-2), I wanted to talk about the perfectly acceptable Al-Bhed language.
At first I hated it because I thought that putting a whole language for one to learn in a game was pretty annoying. I then gained interest in this idea as I started to learn it. I especially liked the fact that the characters actually spoke in this language when all it was was the rearranging of the english alphabet.
With that I figured you could replace any latter of the alphabet with any other and have a whole new language that can be perfectly spoken.

Fore example:
Take tha letters W E- M U S T- G O- N O W and switch
them in this order; A S- O G E R- V U- T U F so that each letter is replaced by the letter directly below it in each column.
It would be pronounced as follows :(az) (Oh-ger) (Voo) (Toof)
and it may be spoken as so: (azz oh-ger vooo toof!)

Throw in a race of some sort, give them an accent and there you have it.

The Al-Bhed language itself was pretty entertaining when the people spoke it in their own accent. Square did a good job at using their audio capabilities to further grab our attention.

So I guess the point of this topic is that you can pretty much create a simple language using only letters and give it an accent of some sort to create a whole new experience for your audience. Well that and I wanted to show my appreciation for a new language that I guess I can say I learned.

This is actually pretty neat, I've been tinkering with the idea of having racial languages in my RPG... I think I'll have it avaliable for characters who wish to have a bit more racial identity, but at the same time there will be a universal lanuage (English).

If I do decide to have racial languages, I think I'll just go with this route!

Actually, Al Bhed means "Al Bhed" in Al Bhed. Specific nouns (names and languages, e.g.) are said the same. For example, Yuna and Rikku are amazing! would translate to "Yuna ert Rikku yna ysywehk!"

How the hell would you pronounce some of this stuff?

If you've studyied Spanish or German, the accent and pronounciation will seem familiar.

For instance:

"Hello Everyone!"
...translates to...
"Rammu Ajanouha!"

This is pernounced:
"Rah-moo Aja-noah!"

Another example:

"Where the Hell is Rikku?!
...translates to...
"Frana dra Hell ec Rikku?!

Since both Hell and Rikku are pronouns (names), they are said normally.

This is pronounced:
"Fra-na drah Hell ek Rikku?!"

As with most foreign languages, a "c" at the end of a word is pernounced as a "k".

One more example:

"Why are my pants wet?"
...translates to...
"Fro yna so byhdc fad?"

This is pronounced:
Frow ya-na so bi-dik faud?"

Try saying these phrases aloud and you'll get a slight feel for the accent.
